Xmtb McConvey Cycles - Spring Series - Round 3 - 02 March 2014

Ormeau Park Belfast

The third and final round of the Xmtb McConvey Cycles mountain bike series took place on Sunday 2 March 2014 at Ormeau Park in Belfast.  The task for the course builders was to come up with a challenging but flowing course that used the same area of the park but making best use of the less muddy sections.  The morning of the race arrived and it was quite mild with little wind and broken cloud.  A nice morning for off-road racing.  The youth races followed a similar pattern to the first two rounds with only the Under 12s getting a slight change in laps, from 4 to 3, which was met with no complaints from the young riders!  After their race the seniors and Under 14s were given permission to go on to the course to practice.  At noon the fore-casted rain arrived.  It was a steady drizzle which went on until 2:30.  This covered the period of time that the seniors, Under 14s and Under 16s were competing.  The nice flowing track became one long mud slide.  A messy one.  The mud was clogging up the gears and chains and was the most likely cause for almost 20 riders to pull out of the race.  The ones that did finish were covered head to toe in mud riding bikes that were much heavier at the finish than at the start with the weight of the mud.  A tough day for all.

Afterwards the riders and host club made their way down to the Ozone Centre where there was a great spread of food, tea and coffee.  The prize giving for the whole series then took place with medals and trophies handed out.  The crowd then stayed in place for the raffle with the minor prizes of chocolates and wine going first before the star prize, a brand new Specialized bike went up for raffle.  The bike was sponsored by Eamon McConvey of McConvey cycles in Belfast and was won by Sean Maguire of VC Glendale.

The club again wish to thank Belfast City Council for their ongoing support of the event .

Xmtb McConvey Cycles - Spring Series - Round 2 - 23 February 2014

Ormeau Park Belfast

It was a return to Ormeau Park for Round 2 of the Xmtb McConvey Cycles spring series.  This event was almost not going to go ahead as the course from the previous round had been very mucky and the weather during the week had not helped it.  Thankfully Mark Harvey and Robbie Lamont came up with a new course design that avoided the worst of the areas from the previous week but still left a good challenging circuit for all riders.  Many of the course sections were run in reverse from last week to further add to the high level of course set up by the squad.  The morning started with heavy rain and strong winds which thankfully died down by the time sign on opened at 9:30.  The car park was again on the gravel pitch beside the Ozone Centre with the race starts now moved to the tarmac path rather than the grass.  As before the Under 6s were given their own separate course which again proved popular for the young riders and the cheering parents.  The Under 8s had 2 laps to do and the Under 10s 4 laps of the same course.  The Under 12s course had been extended but they were still asked to do 4 laps.  The break between races allowed time for practice.  At 12:15 the Under 14s and Senior B men races (3 and 5 laps respectively).  There was another short break before the Under 16s and Senior A men and women had their races.  The course was running well, the mud that was there was not thick and there was a good flow to it.  The event was well attended with riders and spectators enjoying the fine weather where even the sun made a brief appearance.  The club again wish to thank Belfast City Council for their ongoing support of the event.  Round 3 takes place next Sunday 2 Mark in the same venue.  Prize giving will take place in the Ozone Centre after the final race which will include food and a raffle including the special prize of a new bike courtesy of McConvey Cycles!!

Xmtb McConvey Cycles - Spring Series - Round 1 - 16 February 2014

Ormeau Park Belfast

Round 1 of the 2014 Mountain Bike Spring Series hosted by Xmtb McConvey Cycles took place at Ormeau Park on the 16 February.  The weather in the lead up to the race had been awful with heavy rain, strong winds and then a sharp frost on the morning of the race.  Thankfully the day itself was dry, bright with blue skies, cold but hardly a breath of wind.  Mark Harvey was chief course designer and had created a new set up for all ages moving the course away from the traditional tarmac start and incorporating more twists and turns among the trees.  The ground conditions varied greatly from gravel path to light mud, heavy mud, deep muddy puddles, off camber climbs and descents.  A real test for the riders.  Mark did however create a great little course for the Under 6s on a flat part of the park which allowed them to enjoy some racing without the need of parental assistance.  The Under 6s was the first race of the day which took place at 10:30.  This race was followed by the Under 8s (10:45) and Under 10s (11:00) who shared the same course design but a different number of laps.  The Under 12s had a longer course to do.  Racing then paused from 11:40 to 12:15 when the new set up of the Senior B mens race (for the beginners or recent beginners!).  They set off 3 minutes after the Under 14s, both taking in the full course.  At 1:30 the Senior A mens race started along with the single senior female and this was 3 minutes behind the Under 16s.  The turn out overall was very good and there was a great atmosphere around the course with plenty of spectators out enjoying the day.  The club wish to thank Belfast City Council for their ongoing support of the event.  Round 2 takes place next Sunday 23 February in the same venue.  Mark tells me that the course will be run in reverse next week.
